SXP Training Boy’s Q&A: Peyton Murray Hempfield

Peyton Murray
Hempfield Area High School
Senior
Events: Discus & Shotput
Favorite Invitational: Baldwin & WCCA
College Fall 2024: Notre Dame University

How did you first become involved in track and field?
My dad has been coaching track since before I was born, and he was also an All-American at Allegheny College.

What is your favorite event to compete in, and why?
My favorite event to compete in is the discus because I love how it feels when I hit a big throw.

Who has been your biggest influence or inspiration in Track & Field ?
Both my brother and my dad are my biggest inspirations. They were both great throwers, so I strive to be better than them.  I still have to hit my brothers high school PR of 58’4”. Getting closer though!

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received from a coach or teammate ?
“The only person stopping you is yourself” -Coach Murray

Is there a specific race or competition you’re particularly proud of?
I’m proud of my performance at states last year. I was ranked 11th In the shot put going into it and I ended up taking second. I also won the discus with a new PR throw.

What are your goals this season?
My goals are to break my schools’ records and if everything goes perfect to break the state record in the discus.

What is your favorite track and field memory from your high school career so far?
When I won the 100th WCCA meet, and my brother and dad presented me the most valuable field athlete award. This award was named after one of my dad’s old coaches, Dave Parry.

What do you enjoy most about the sport of track and field, both in terms of training and competing?
The most enjoying part is hitting a big PR. It’s a great feeling to know all your hard work is paying off.

Can you share a challenging moment in your track and field journey and how you overcame it?
The most challenging moment in my career was when I fouled out of indoor states my sophomore year and then injured my hip a few weeks later. I overcame it by working harder than ever before and keeping my body healthier.

Looking beyond high school, do you have aspirations to continue your track and field career in college or at a higher level? How do you envision your future in the sport, and what goals have you set for yourself?
Next year I will be throwing at  Notre Dame. My dream is to be a national champion and hopefully throw post-collegiately.

As the defending PIAA Discus State Champion, Peyton Murray stands on the threshold of joining an elite circle this season. To date, only 31 boys have achieved the distinction of winning three or more individual WPIAL championships. Peyton is on the cusp of clinching his third consecutive WPIAL discus championship, a testament to his dedication, hard work, and motivation to become one of the best throwers in WPIAL history.
