X Shadyside Girl’s Q&A : Mia Gartley Quaker Valley

Mia Gartley
Quaker Valley
Sophomore
Events: High Jump, Hurdles, & Middle Distance
Favorite Invitational: Butler Invitational

Who has been your biggest influence or inspiration in Track & Field ?
My biggest inspiration in track and field has been Anna Hall. I love seeing how dedicated she is to the sport and how she is working so hard to heal herself from her surgery.

Is there a specific race or competition you’re particularly proud of?
WPIAL individuals 2023, I’m particularly proud of this because I had no intentions on trying to qualify for states that day, I just wanted to overcome my mental block.

What are your goals this season?
My goals are to work harder by putting in more time and effort. I wanna become more dedicated to the sport I love.

What is your favorite track and field memory from your high school career so far?
My favorite memory so far is from my freshman year. During the Butler 9/10 invitational our bus broke, so my teammates and I found a pop-up pasta bar by the bathrooms, and we talked and ate pasta.

How has being a part of a track and field team influenced your overall high school experience?
Being a member of the track and field team has highly influenced my high school experience. Not only is it great to do something I love, but it’s also a great social aspect. I’ve met some of my closest friends through track.

How has your coach played a role in your development as a track and field athlete?

My coaches always push me to the limit. It’s extremely motivating having coach’s that believe in me and continue to push me.

How do you manage stress and nerves before a big competition?
Stress and nerves play a big aspect in how I compete. I try my best to tell myself that doing track is just for fun, and I also pray about my troubles.

Track and field events can be highly technical. Can you discuss the importance of technique in your specific events and any adjustments or improvements you’ve made to enhance your performance?
I started high jump in 8th grade, I had no mark or form techniques. When I reached high school, they gave me a mark to count my steps, and my coaches helped me with timing techniques to avoid hitting the bar.

Winning an individual WPIAL championship in Track and Field often takes athletes four years, but Quaker Valley’s Mia Gartley defied these odds. As a freshman last season, she captured a gold medal in one of AA’s most competitive events: the girls’ high jump. With her committed determination, Mia plans to diligently continue her hard work, leveraging the support and expertise of her coaches and teammates. Her goal is clear: to stand atop the podium once more as a two-time WPIAL champion. Mia’s journey exemplifies not just natural talent, but the power of perseverance and hard work in reaching new heights of success and new heights in the high jump this season.
