The Salt & Pepper Food Truck Boys Q&A: Matthew Sarnowski Penn-Trafford

Matthew Sarnowski
Penn-Trafford High School
Senior
Events: Discus, Shot Put, & Javelin
Favorite Invitational: Wildcat Invitational

What is your favorite event to compete in, and why?
My favorite event is definitely the discus. I have always been the best at discus among the three throwing events, and that is why it is my favorite. However, I truly love how it allows for a longer-range throw within just a circle.

What’s one thing you wish more people knew about track and field?
I feel like people don’t always understand that, even though track is very much an individual sport, it also has an extremely competitive and fun team aspect. I think it’s not always known that for a team to do well, everyone on the team has to come together and score points, making track and field a significant team sport in addition to its individual nature.

What advice would you give to younger athletes who are just starting their journey in track and field?
My advice would definitely be not to give up after the first couple of attempts at throwing. Especially in throwing events, it’s crucial to work on your technique and continue refining it. If you put in the effort to master the correct technique, you will achieve long throws.

What do you enjoy most about the sport of track and field, both in terms of training and competing?
I really enjoy the individual mindset required for track and field. It’s a complete contrast to playing football in the fall, where the focus is much more on the team. I appreciate the contrast between the sports I participate in, as it allows me to understand both aspects of mentally preparing for different types of competition.

Can you share a challenging moment in your track and field journey and how you overcame it?
During my junior year, I became extremely burnt out two weeks before the WPIAL championships. I wasn’t achieving the marks I needed, nor was I hitting the goals I had set at the beginning of the season. I took a complete weekend off from track and rested.

How do you contribute to creating a positive and supportive team culture within the track and field program?
I strive to assist others as much as possible within the team atmosphere. Even if someone just needs to talk about something unrelated before an event, I want to be there for them. I also make efforts to recruit people for the team. Ultimately, I want our team to succeed, and I give everything I have to make that happen.

Can you walk us through your journey in track and field? How did you discover your passion for the sport, and what events do you specialize in?
When I was younger, I started playing baseball and continued until middle school. I liked baseball, but I didn’t love it. My last season of baseball coincided with my first season of track and field on the middle school team. Midway through the season, I realized that baseball wasn’t for me, and that track was where I truly wanted to be. As a pitcher in baseball, everyone suggested that I should try throwing, and that’s what I have been doing every spring since then.
