X Shadyside: Laurel’s Tori Atkins Eyes Historic WPIAL Championship Streak

In the world of sprinting, maintaining consistency, achieving success, and capturing gold medals requires an extraordinary level of dedication and talent. Yet, for Laurel senior Tori Atkins, it has become second nature. As one of the most decorated female athletes in WPIAL Track & Field history, she is now on the brink of achieving an unprecedented milestone. Since 1980, no female athlete in the WPIAL has claimed four consecutive championships in both the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. Now, Atkins stands just two races away from cementing her legacy with this historic achievement.

What has been your biggest motivator throughout your track and field career, especially as you approach your senior season?
Throughout my track and field career, the expectations and pressure to perform at a high level have been my biggest motivators. I have always placed a lot of pressure on myself, but knowing that people believe in me pushes me to work harder and aim higher. I want to prove to them—and to myself—that I can rise to the challenge. As I enter my senior year, my biggest motivation is the pursuit of a WPIAL four-peat in both the 200 and 400-meter dashes. That goal drives me to push even harder, knowing that every step I take brings me closer to making history.

Who has been the biggest influence on your success as a track athlete?
The biggest influence on my success as a track athlete has undoubtedly been my coaches and family. My coaches have pushed me to believe in my potential, even when I didn’t always see it myself. They’ve instilled in me the values of discipline, focus, and consistency, shaping me into the athlete I am today. But my family has also played a crucial role. They show up for me, no matter what, offering unwavering support and encouragement. Knowing they are always in my corner has given me the confidence and drive to chase my goals and continue improving.

How do you balance the pressure of breaking records with enjoying the sport?
Balancing the pressure of breaking records while still enjoying the sport is definitely a challenge. However, I remind myself that track and field is something I love, and any records I set are simply a result of my dedication and passion. While it’s easy to get caught up in the pressure to perform, I try to focus on the process rather than just the outcome. I don’t step onto the track expecting to break records—I focus on running my best race. Whatever happens beyond that is a bonus.
