Cross country is one of the most unique sports in Western Pennsylvania. Athletes open the season in the heat of mid-August, battling temperatures that can climb into the 80s and 90s, and finish on the first Saturday in November, when temperatures can dip into the 30s and even snow can fall as state champions are crowned.
Each season brings a new story. Freshmen enter the cross country 5K world for the first time, sophomores return with valuable experience under their belts, juniors look to make their breakthrough, and seniors chase one final opportunity to leave their mark. Along the way, teams develop, contenders emerge, and championship-caliber squads find another gear when it matters most.
This season brings a rare storyline: all six 2025 WPIAL individual cross country champions return. Shady Side Academy’s Charlotte Barker, Hampton’s Rebekah Hall, South Fayette’s Angela Zeng, Sewickley Academy’s Zachary Sharara, Norwin’s Benjamin McBride, and Quaker Valley’s Jonah Montagnese are all back to defend their titles. Montagnese will also look to defend his PIAA Class 2A boys cross country championship.
With six defending WPIAL champions returning, a PIAA champion back to defend his title, powerhouse programs looking to reload, and another wave of breakout runners ready to emerge, what are the biggest burning questions heading into the 2026 cross country season?
Burning Questions 2026
Overall
With all six 2025 WPIAL individual champions returning, which athlete will rise to the challenge and dethrone a defending champion this season?
3A Girls
Can the Norwin girls place six runners on the medal podium at the WPIAL Championships, and can they go back-to-back at the PIAA Championships to capture another state title?
Angela Zeng of South Fayette won the 2025 WPIAL Championship by an impressive 28 seconds. Can she deliver another dominant championship performance in 2026?
Fox Chapel returns a young and talented squad determined to take another step forward this season. Can they challenge the experienced Norwin squad at White Oak Park this fall for the WPIAL team championship?
Can the North Allegheny girls make a strong postseason run and challenge for a WPIAL championship or earn a PIAA team qualifying spot?
Will Kathryn and Allyson Froelich join the Peters Township cross country team in 2026? Kathryn became the first WPIAL girl to break 10 minutes in the two-mile, running 9:57.66 at New Balance Nationals. If that elite track speed translates to the XC course, could she immediately become a low-17-minute 5K runner and a WPIAL/PIAA title contender?
Gateway’s Piper Munyon left the 2025 WPIAL Finals with a silver medal and continued to improve on the biggest stages. Entering her junior year, can she take another major step forward and make a run at a 17-minute 5K?
2A Girls
Hampton’s Rebekah Hall returns to defend her WPIAL Class 2A individual title but will face one of the deepest fields in the WPIAL this season. She has lowered her time on the White Oak course by more than 60 seconds over the past two seasons. Could another significant improvement put her into the exclusive sub-18-minute club?
Charlotte Barker of Shady Side Academy left the 2025 WPIAL Finals as the only female athlete to capture both individual and team gold. Now moving into Class 2A, can she accomplish the feat again against a deeper field?
North Catholic returns four of its top seven runners this season. Will they repeat as WPIAL champions, or will 2025 PIAA Class 1A state champion Shady Side Academy immediately challenge for the crown after moving up to Class 2A?
Lucy Montagnese and Maggie Doz lead a talented Quaker Valley squad this season. With Montagnese healthy, how far can she climb after battling her way to a 16th-place finish in 2025?
Natalie Zolinas of Knoch made one of the biggest jumps in the field last season, climbing 40 spots at the 2025 WPIAL Finals compared with the previous year. Now a senior, can she make another major leap and establish herself among Class 2A’s top contenders?
1A Girls
The championship picture in Class 1A girls looks dramatically different entering 2026, but OLSH and Winchester Thurston remain firmly in the hunt. Both programs return talented groups of young runners with the potential to contend for WPIAL and PIAA team championships.
The top three finishers from the 2025 WPIAL Championship are gone this season, opening the door for a new champion. Fourth-place finisher Currence Bigham of Winchester Thurston, fifth-place finisher Jules Goshen of OLSH, sixth-place finisher Hannah Hayes of OLSH, seventh-place finisher Miri Shaw of Hillel Academy, and eighth-place finisher Indie Pascal of Winchester Thurston all return with their sights set on the top spot. Will one of these proven contenders rise to the top, or will a breakout athlete like Eden Christian Academy’s Hannah Wallace or Greensburg Central Catholic’s Ainsleigh Stickle emerge and shake up the championship race?
