The Salt & Pepper Food Truck : Girls Q&A of the week- Addie Fry Indiana

Addie Fry
Indiana
Sophomore
Favorite XC Course: Cal U

How did you get started in cross-country ?
I used to be a dancer and got injured, so I ran for rehab. I became obsessed with it and wanting to start competing, so I tried out that fall.

What is the most challenging aspect of cross-country for you?
My biggest challenge with cross country is self-doubt. I’m always afraid to push myself in fear that I’ll go out too hard and bomb the race. I can train as hard as I can and push every limit at practice, but as soon as it comes to a race, I get afraid. I’m working on getting out of my head this season.

Do you have a favorite cross-country memory or race?
My favorite memories and races were from 8th grade when I got to run alongside one my best friends, Chloe Hain. No matter how we did we were always proud of each other, and I miss that energy.

What are your goals for this cross-country season?
My goal for this season is to run a 19:30 5k, top 15 at WPIALS, and hopefully top 25 at states.

Can you share any memorable experiences or achievements from your cross-country career so far?
Qualifying for states last year as a freshman was one of the best experiences. I was blessed and humbled to be running with the most talented girls.

Can you describe the bond and support you share with your coach? How does their guidance influence your running journey?
I am lucky enough to have a couple coaches that support me. My first ever cross-country coaches, Ken and Jamie Branan, were the first ones to show me how to love cross country and work hard. Even though they don’t coach me anymore they are always sending me and posting the kindest and encouraging things. My current coaches Mrs. Lockard and Mrs. Kauffman have shown me to work outside my comfort zone and be kinder to myself in the expectations I set.

The young, talented sophomore looks to continue to build off her momentum from the 2022 XC season, where she was a PIAA XC qualifier in her freshman year. In 2023, she has had three top-20 finishes and set a personal record of 20:29 at the RWB Classic. There is no doubt that Addie could join the sub-20-minute club by the WPIAL Finals in three weeks.
