Burning Questions in March for the 2024 WPIAL Track and Field Season

How fast will Drew Griffith run, and will we see a dream 1600m/mile race between him, Dale Hall, & Ryan Pajak at the Baldwin Invitational or Butler Invitational in 2024? This could be a promoter’s dream to invite other runners from Pennsylvania to feature all of the state’s best for a pre-state championship preview.

Will Logan St. John Kletter attempt the distance trifecta at the WPIAL finals? She is the reigning WPIAL champ in the 1600m & 3200m. Could she add the 800-meter run to her goals list in 2024?

Colton Dean has the ability to leave the WPIAL Finals with 4 gold medals, but in which events will he compete? Colton is the reigning national champion in the decathlon. Which events will he focus on this season?

Rose Kuchera is currently the #2 Triple Jumper of all time in WPIAL history with a mark of 40-9. Will she pass Nikita Lewis’s 41-2 ½ mark to move into the #1 spot?

Could Kaevon Gardner add a WPIAL title in the 200m, 4×100, & Long Jump to his 2023 WPIAL 100-meter dash championship?

Will junior Gamaliel Mogire from North Hills add the 110 hurdle WPIAL to his list of accomplishments?

In the boys’ Triple A high jump, 7 out of the top 8 medalists return in 2024. Who will emerge as the WPIAL champ?

How many times will we see Peyton Murray & Matthew Sarnowski battle in the discus? They were 1st and 2nd at the WPIAL Finals & 1st and 3rd at the PIAA Championships last year.

The North Allegheny girls’ trio of Costa, Currie, and Winning have the ability to complete a NA sweep in the girls’ 400-meter dash this year, with all three ladies having the ability to win the race.

No sprinter in the WPIAL has more experience than South Fayette’s Olivia Renk. This could be the year she wins her 1st individual gold medal to go along with her two WPIAL 4×100 medals & her PIAA State Championship 4×100 medal.

How many girls will break the 5:05 mark in the girls’ AAA 1600 meter run at the WPIAL finals in May?

All 3 2023 WPIAL champs have graduated on the AAA girls’ side in shot put, discus, and javelin. Will athletes like Marlo Cyanovich, Jayla Antomachi, and Maggie Clair step up to claim the #1 spots in the WPIAL?

Does Derry’s Sophia Mazzoni have a 160 throw in her this season? Only 3 females have thrown over 160 in the history of the WPIAL.

What type of impact will Monroe Law have after transferring to Winchester Thurston on a WPIAL & PIAA level? The sophomore sprinter placed 5th last year in the girls’ 100-meter dash in AAA last season.

Wash High sprinters Dane Asbury & Ruben Gordon finished 1st & 2nd at the WPIAL finals last year. Will they do it again in 2024?

Junior Tori Atkins from Laurel is only halfway through her high school track and field career and already has 4 WPIAL Championships. How many more will she add in 2024?

The top 4 places from last season return in the boys’ 400 meter dash. Will defending champion Demeitris Taylor from Beaver Falls repeat, or will Williams, Ogletree, or Kovell take the top of the podium?

The girls’ 800 meter run returns 14 out of 16 finalists from 2023. The field includes Hope Haring, the defending champion, & Ellie Cain, the 2022 champion.

The WPIAL has won the boys’ AA 800 meter run at the PIAA championships for 3 consecutive seasons. Belczyk Riverside 2021, McCoy Deer Lakes 2022, & Bauer Riverview 2023. Who is going to continue the streak? Lalomia, Kruse, Guerrini, & DeSimone look to be the top contenders to continue the WPIAL state champ streak.

Will Single A boys XC state champ Jaxon Schoedel add an outdoor state championship in the 1600-meter run & 3200 meter run this season.

The AA boys will have 8 new medalists in the boys’ Shot Put, as all 8 medal winners from 2023 were seniors, making a wave of new Shot Put contenders.

Shenango placed 3 girls in the discus last year. Could we see a 1,2,3 sweep in 2024?

The girls’ high jump returns 7 medalists from 2023, with 6 of them clearing 5-2 at the WPIAL Finals. In a competitive event, every attempt and miss will count.
