Vault Athletics:Mazzoni Faces New Challenges as Derry Moves to AAA in 2025

Only four girls in WPIAL history have ever thrown the javelin over 160 feet, and Derry Area’s Sophia Mazzoni is among them. The future Auburn Tiger and reigning 2024 AA Girls’ PIAA Javelin State Champion is now preparing to face even tougher competition as her school transitions to AAA due to new enrollment figures.

With 253 girls enrolled in grades 9-11, Derry surpassed the AA cutoff by just three students—a small margin that brings a significant shift in competition. However, Mazzoni remains undeterred. Already the 2024 New Balance National Champion, she also holds the 7th-best throw in the nation among high school female athletes in 2024.

But no matter the classification, Mazzoni is determined to prove that her dominance on the runway is here to stay.

How do you feel about the transition to AAA competition, and how are you preparing for the challenge?
Moving up to AAA this year presents a new challenge, and I couldn’t be more excited. I’ve already competed against several athletes in AAA, so the transition won’t feel entirely unfamiliar. That said, my preparation and routine will remain the same as I enter this classification.
I’m always up for a challenge, and it’s an amazing experience to compete at both levels during my high school career. I see this as another opportunity to push myself and grow as an athlete.

How has winning the 2024 New Balance National Championship and achieving the 7th-best throw in the nation impacted your confidence going into this season?
Winning gold at New Balance Nationals was truly a dream come true—I never imagined I’d have one of those medals around my neck. Knowing I have the 7th-best throw in the nation has definitely fueled my excitement and confidence heading into my final high school season.
More than anything, this achievement has shown me that hard work pays off. It has motivated me to push even harder in training, whether it’s in the gym or on the runway. I know that every extra rep, every drill, and every throw is building toward something greater.

Who has been your biggest influence or supporter throughout your javelin career?
Without a doubt, my biggest support system has been my family. I know you might expect me to name a famous athlete or an influencer, but my family is the reason I’m where I am today.
No matter where the meet was or what kind of slump I was in, they were always there—cheering me on, supporting me, and believing in me. The sacrifices they’ve made for me along this journey mean everything, and I couldn’t imagine picking anyone else as my biggest influence.
Every time I set a new personal record or have a great throw, the first thing I do is look at them. Seeing the pride on their faces makes me even more excited to keep pushing forward and doing what I love.
