What is your favorite event to compete in, and why?
My favorite event to compete in is the Pole Vault because there is nothing like it. There is no other event where you get the chance to put yourself that high in the air and somehow clear a bar. It is difficult, and risky, and I love it.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received from a coach or teammate ?
The best advice that I have ever received was from my coach Mr. Cochran, and he said to me before jumping. “It’s a good day to have a great day”. This really was just a confidence boost and, in my opinion, a great way to look at the opportunity you have to compete.
What aspects of track and field do you find most challenging, and how do you overcome those challenges?
The most challenging thing about track and field is overcoming adversity. If you are not able to come into practice with a clear mind and ready to work, it is impossible to get anything done, and you end up getting down on yourself. It can be very difficult to keep a positive growth mindset while in a slump, but I can guarantee if you do, good things will happen quicker. I overcome this challenge of mindset by just being appreciative of the moment and the fact that I am even given the opportunity to compete in track and field.
Can you share a specific moment that was particularly memorable for you, whether it was a victory or a personal achievement?
I think for me the most memorable moment in track and field for me was the first time qualifying for States. My freshman year, I had barely progressed, but as the season started to come to an end, I was getting better and better. I was seeded around 10th for the WPIAL meet and ended up jumping a Personal Record of 12’9” to qualify for the State Meet. I was beyond excited!
How has being a part of a track and field team influenced your overall high school experience?
I would be lying if I didn’t say that high school is better with track and field. Although it is not as big as football, basketball, or baseball, I would say that some of the most talented athletes compete in track and field. I know that being a part of that team and the lessons that track, and field has taught me I take with me into everyday life. Without track and field, life would be rough.
In your opinion, what makes track and field a unique and rewarding sport, and how has it shaped your character and values?
I think that track and field is something where individually you get to better yourself by working hard and getting stronger, but also you are put into an environment where the team is more important than the individual cause. In the end, it comes down to the people that you are working with every single day to become better. It has shaped me by allowing me to be mentored by other athletes, coaches, and given me the opportunity to mentor and guide other athletes.

Charlie kicks off his outdoor season on a high note as the reigning WPIAL Boys AAA Pole Vault Champion. With spirits high and determination unwavering, he’s all set to defend his title in 2024, aiming to soar even higher this year. In the most difficult event in Track and Field, Charlie is mentally tough and brings a positive attitude to both him and his teammates. I believe he has the ability to finally surpass the 15-foot barrier in his final high school season.
