Derry Area senior Sophia Mazzoni, finished her 2023 season with a PIAA AA girls’ javelin silver medal around her neck, boasting a PR of 143-6 at the time. Fast forward 10 months, and at the first meet of the 2024 season, Sophia unleashed a throw of 156-10, which is the 7th best throw in WPIAL history. “Coming out with a top throw like this one, is going to keep my confidence and mentality up. Along with the support I have in the process, I have Coach McNichol, and my whole track team behind me. Knowing I’m capable of having a huge PR jump from my last, keeps me motivated to work even harder in the weight room, and the runway focusing on little things.” said Mazzoni.

As the first month of the season wraps up in the next couple of days, Sophia has more to show this season and won’t be satisfied until she accomplishes everything she sets out to achieve in her senior year. “My ultimate goal is to hit 170 feet this year. I want to break the County Coaches Invitational record, and the WPIAL record. I am coming for the PIAA states record. I want to stay consistent with my throws, and get better and better while doing it. Staying patient is the way to go, taking it one practice and meet at a time.” explained Mazzoni
