What was the most challenging moment in your career and how did you overcome it?
The most challenging moment in my career so far was missing out on states by one spot in my freshman year when I finished 5th place in the 300m hurdles at the WPIAL championships. Being so close to success was crushing; however, it just made me want to work twice as hard and bounce back. That desire built a great foundation for the next season and allowed me to come back to the WPIAL championship and win the 300mH race, sending me to states as a sophomore!
What advice would you give to younger athletes who are just starting their journey in track and field?
For younger athletes getting started in track and field, I would tell them, “Do not let a loss define you.” This is one of the most important mindsets out there because a bad race today does not always mean tomorrow’s race will be horrible as well.
How do you manage stress and nerves before a big competition?
When it comes to managing nerves before a big competition, I always closely watch the winners of other events before my event comes up because it always makes me think to myself, “If they can do it, then so can I!” Also, Kayden Lightner, a teammate of mine who qualified for states alongside me, understands what headspace is needed to compete at a high level, so we talk through our emotions on race day to perform our best.
Track and field often involves setting and breaking personal records. Can you share a particularly memorable achievement or moment when you surpassed your own expectations, and what did you learn from that experience?
A moment when I surpassed my own expectations was at the Butler Invite, where I ran a 39.33 in the 300-meter hurdles to set a new personal record. What I learned from that experience is that anything is possible if you put your mind to it and work hard towards that goal.
Athletes often draw inspiration from others. Are there any track and field athletes, past or present, who inspire you, and how do they influence your approach to the sport?
Last season, my coach introduced me to Edwin Moses and his approach to the intermediate hurdle race. He went undefeated for 10 years because of his scientific approach to the hurdles event, which I find inspiring. He influenced my approach to the 300 hurdles event since my coach and I have been practicing certain cues and strategies similar to Edwin’s in practice to implement on race day.

The 2023 Boys WPIAL AAA 300-meter hurdle champion returns to defend his championship from a year ago. Gamaliel Mogire from North Hills is one of the top hurdlers in the state of Pennsylvania. With him being only a junior, the sky’s the limit for accomplishments, records, and achievements in the sport of track and field. I could see him going under 15 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and under 39 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles in 2024.
