What is your favorite event to compete in, and why?
My favorite event to compete in is high jump. High jump is my favorite because of how much goes into it. It’s not just jumping over a bar; it’s about having the right steps, making sure your approach is right, and the hardest part: maintaining good form. Working on all those aspects is a lot of effort, but there isn’t a better feeling than when everything goes right, and you achieve a personal record (PR).
What was the most challenging moment in your career, and how did you overcome it?
The most challenging moment was straining my hip flexor 3 weeks before the WPIAL championship meet. I was unable to run or jump until a week before the meet and was definitely not close to 100%. I overcame this by rehabbing every day with my trainer and not letting this injury end my season. We put a ton of work in to get me back to a point where I could compete. I was still in a lot of pain but managed to jump at WPIAL and made it to states.
Is there a specific race or competition you’re particularly proud of?
I am particularly proud of my performance at the WPIAL championship meet. Competing after not practicing or participating in any meets for 3 weeks was extremely tough. I did everything I could to be able to jump and ended up tying for 3rd, which qualified me for states.
What’s one thing you wish more people knew about track and field?
I wish more people understood that track and field is not just about running every day. There are so many different events offered that you might never think you would enjoy. In track, you also get to socialize with so many people and make lots of new friendships.
What are your goals this season?
I have multiple goals this season. I want to beat all of my personal records, become the WPIAL champion in high jump, qualify for states in the 400m, and most importantly, stay healthy.
What is your favorite track and field memory from your high school career so far?
My favorite track and field memory is when I first jumped 6 feet at McGuffey. It was raining that day, and I asked my coach if she could take me out of the high jump because I didn’t want to jump on the wet mat. She didn’t let me withdraw, thankfully, and I ended up beating my previous PR of 5’7” by jumping 6’0”, which made me fall in love with high jump.

Burgettstown’s Zack Schrockman enters his senior season with unfinished business from his 2023 campaign. Now healthy and stronger, Zack appears to be a contender in the 400-meter dash, long jump, and high jump at the WPIAL Finals. There is no doubt he could achieve times in the low 51 seconds for the 400, jump over 20-5 in the long jump, and clear 6-4 in the high jump.
