How did you first become involved in track and field?
I first became involved in track during 7th grade. My 8th-grade track season was cancelled due to COVID, which caused me to quit for good. I did soccer, basketball, and lacrosse my freshman year of high school and was planning on doing the same my sophomore year, but I switched and tried indoor track. I had a very successful season and made the hard decision to quit lacrosse to continue into the outdoor season.
What is your favorite event to compete in, and why?
My favorite event to compete in is the high jump because it’s so unique. I would have never imagined myself being able to get my whole body over a 5 ft+ bar, but now I can, and it’s just a cool thing to be able to do. I also love high jump because of all the girls I compete against. We have all formed friendships with each other, and it makes the competitions very enjoyable.
How do you mentally prepare yourself for a big competition?
It can be really intimidating to prepare for big meets, but I think the most important thing is reminding myself to be confident in my abilities. If I get to the meet and start doubting myself, it will affect my performance, so before a big meet, I try not to be negative and just focus on the good.
What aspects of track and field do you find most challenging, and how do you overcome those challenges?
The aspect I find most challenging about track is only getting one shot to prove yourself, specifically in the hurdles. Showing up to the big meets, you only get one chance to show everything you’ve worked for, and if you mess up, it’s over. Coming from soccer, this was so different to me because in big games, you have 90 minutes to prove yourself, and one mistake does not define the game. Yet in hurdles, one slip or trip could cost the race.
Looking beyond high school, do you have aspirations to continue your track and field career in college or at a higher level? How do you envision your future in the sport, and what goals have you set for yourself?
In college, I plan on doing the pentathlon/heptathlon. I haven’t had the opportunity to compete in this event yet, so I’m super excited to finally be able to. I will need to learn how to do events I have never competed in before, such as shot put, javelin, and the 800m, which is intimidating, but I’m eager to learn. I think I will have success in the pent/hep because of my ability to learn things quickly. I also already do high jump and hurdles, which are two of the harder events to master, so I think that gives me a slight advantage.

Fox Chapel’s Anna Troutman is one of the most versatile female track and field athletes in the WPIAL. As a 5-5 high jumper, a long jumper with a distance of over 17 feet, a 35-5 triple jumper, and a 15.4-second 100-meter hurdler, Anna’s two strongest events are the high jump and 100-meter hurdles. In these, she stands out as one of the top athletes in the girls’ AAA field this season. Anna is a goal-driven track and field competitor who aims to achieve 5-6 in the high jump and times in the low 15s for the 100-meter hurdles at the WPIAL finals, and she looks to bring home two PIAA medals in 2024.
