Is there a specific race or competition you’re particularly proud of?
WPIAL finals for the 100m hurdles. I dropped over half a second from my previous PR and made the top 6 to go to states.
How did you first become involved in track and field?
When I was younger, my parents put me in almost every sport you can think of, but I never had the opportunity to do track. I was always very fast, so when I got into middle school and had the chance to try it, I took a liking to it and have been doing it ever since.
What is your favorite event to compete in, and why?
I love competing in the 100m hurdles. I enjoy the technicality that comes with it and how you can always improve on your race.
What are your goals this season?
I want to continue to improve my technique in my events and drop my times. The end-of-season goal is to place again at WPIALs and qualify for states.
How do you manage stress and nerves before a big competition?
Leading up to the competition, I like to watch videos of my previous races. Watching my good races helps calm my nerves because it puts the idea in my head that if I ran well once, I can do it again. Watching the bad races allows me to see the mistakes I’ve made and helps me think about what I can do better. Right before I’m about to run, I envision myself doing the race the way I’ve been practicing, and that calms my nerves.
What is the most significant lesson you’ve learned from your experiences in track and field?
You are the only one who can put yourself in the position where you want to be. You can always have support from the people around you, your coaches, and teammates, but at the end of the day, you have to be the one who works hard and showed for it.

One of the top up-and-coming hurdlers in girls’ AA, West Mifflin junior Mariah Lewis, is looking to continue her success from her sophomore year, during which she qualified for the PIAA championship in the 100-meter hurdles. This season, Mariah has the ability to break the 16.1-second barrier, which would put her right in contention for a WPIAL Championship in 2024.
