X Shadyside Q&A: Connor Stokes Elizabeth Forward

Connor Stokes
Elizabeth Forward
Junior
Events: 100m, 200m, 4×1, & 4×4
Favorite Invitational: Mid Mon Classic

Is there a specific race or competition you’re particularly proud of ?
The race I am most proud of is the 60-meter at the first TSTCA meet at Edinboro this past indoor season. I got 1st place and hit a huge PR from my previous indoor season.

How did you first become involved in track and field ?
I got involved with track and field to stay in shape and become faster for football. As time went on, I slowly fell in love with the sport.

What is your favorite event to compete in, and why?
My favorite event to compete in is definitely the 100m. It is always very competitive, and it shows how fast everyone truly is.

What was the most challenging moment in your career and how did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge was when I was the 5th man (alternate) on the 4x100m team my freshman year. I overcame it by being supportive and helping my team in any way I could, and using that as motivation to become faster.

What are your goals this season ?
The biggest goal for me is to help my team win sections. My personal goals are to medal in the 100m and 200m at the WPIALs.

What is your favorite track and field memory from your high school career so far?
My favorite memory so far is when my team and I won sections.

How do you manage stress and nerves before a big competition?
You can’t remove nerves completely, but sticking to my routine and praying before my races definitely minimizes them for me.

What is the most significant lesson you’ve learned from your experiences in track and field ?
The biggest lessons I’ve learned are hard work and dedication. Many people think speed is natural, but true track athletes know you have to work for it.

If there were a midseason award for one of the most improved sprinters in the WPIAL, Elizabeth Forward’s Connor Stokes would be in the running in 2024. The junior is currently ranked 7th in the 100-meter dash and is looking to bring home two medals in the short sprints. After a successful indoor season, Connor is on a mission to prove he can run with the best that the WPIAL has to offer. With 20 days until the WPIAL Finals at Slippery Rock University, Connor has a chance to go sub-11 in the 100-meter dash and sub-22.3 in the 200-meter dash, times he is fully capable of accomplishing this season.
