Favorite Invitational: TSTCA invitational

How do you mentally prepare yourself for a big competition?
I think about what I need to accomplish and envision myself doing it. I focus on staying calm and composed, reminding myself that preparation and practice have equipped me to succeed. Visualizing the entire event helps me to anticipate challenges and mentally rehearse my responses, increasing my confidence.

How did you first become involved in track and field?
I did a summer track group at SF, took a break, then started again in 8th grade. The exposure to various events in the summer group sparked my interest, and I decided to pursue it more seriously. Returning in 8th grade, I found a supportive community and began honing my skills across different disciplines.

What is your favorite event to compete in and why?
High jump, because I’ve always liked jumping, and high jump is the best event for that. There’s a unique thrill in challenging myself to reach new heights, both literally and figuratively. The event’s technical aspects, from the approach to the take-off and clearing the bar, make it engaging and rewarding to master.

What are your goals this season?
To reach 6’5″ and make nationals. This goal pushes me to improve my technique, strength, and agility, which are crucial for competing at higher levels. Making nationals would also be a testament to my progress and dedication throughout the season.

What is your favorite track and field memory from your high school career so far?
Last year at the section championships, all the SF high jumpers jumped their PRs and swept the championship, with me coming in first. This victory was incredibly gratifying, not just for my own achievement, but for the team’s collective success. It reflected the hard work and camaraderie we’ve built, making it a standout memory in my high school career.

South Fayette’s Tyson Wright started off his 2024 season with a bang, setting a personal record of 6-1 at the Mount Lebanon Invitational in late March. Tyson is setting the bar high this season to achieve his goal of clearing 6-5, which would put him on the medal stand at the WPIAL Finals and qualify him for the PIAA Championships.
