Team Outlook
Coaches’ thoughts on the upcoming season:
Any year that ends with the team making it to Hershey is a good year. Our boys have been fortunate to finish in the top 3 at WPIALs in all nine years since the PIAA moved to 3 classifications. With 7 of our top 8 runners returning from our 2023 WPIAL championship and PIAA runner-up team, we have a reasonable chance of being in the mix again in 2024.
The team favorite for the WPIAL-A is likely Winchester Thurston, who had a fantastic spring track season and has all 5 scorers returning from last year’s 3rd place PIAA XC team. With defending state champ Annville-Cleona, the only single-A team that beat us in any race in 2023, moving up to AA, Winchester Thurston is probably the favorite to earn another PIAA trophy, although a team always emerges from the East.
Mohawk, with a very strong 1-2, perennial power Eden Christian, and Shady Side Academy, who replaced Ellwood City in single-A, each should be contenders for the 3 WPIAL state spots as well.
Individually, each of our three senior returning WPIAL medalists (Christopher, Holden, and Micah) are seeking to return to the WPIAL podium and each should have at least a chance to contend for a PIAA medal. In addition to PIAA XC team and individual medals in 2023, Chris has 9 WPIAL XC and track medals, while Holden and Micah each have earned 6, making the senior threesome the most accomplished class in Riverview XC history.

Team Outlook
Coaches’ thoughts on the upcoming season:
Our girls’ team enters the 2024 season as the defending WPIAL runner-up, seeking its 3rd consecutive state berth and 4th in the last 6 years. Last year, we entered the district championship as one of 6 teams with a realistic shot at one of the 4 qualification spots. We were very fortunate as our girls ran their best race, and a few other top teams didn’t have their best day. This year, we see a similar deep group battling for states, as 6 WPIAL teams project to be in the PIAA top 15 (Winchester Thurston, OLSH, Shady Side Academy, Eden, Carlynton/BC, and Riverview). Thus, while we could be better than last year, the depth of the WPIAL will make it a challenge to match last year’s championship accomplishments.
A big success factor from the ’23 season was the performance of our dual-sport athletes. Four of our eight returners were starters on Riverview’s state runner-up soccer team and will be splitting time between soccer and XC again in ’24. We will need to manage that dual-sport balance even better than last year to have a shot at returning to Hershey.
Individually, Sr. Lily Bauer (sister of 2023 800 state champion Amby– William & Mary) has participated in the PIAA XC meet each of her 3 years. Last summer, she was battling a basketball injury, so we are encouraged that this year she has been injury-free. She has improved each year at both WPIALs and PIAAs, and if she continues that trend, she has a chance to be near the PIAA medal stand in ’24.
