Beyond the Course with Kevyn Fish Hampton

What has been your proudest moment in cross country so far?
Qualifying for states during my freshman year. I had sprained my ankle a few weeks prior and had to be cautious on the challenging Cal-U course. The week leading up to WPIALs, I had a rough experience at Tri-States, which brought down my confidence a bit. But, like in most races, once the gun went off, all the worries disappeared. It had rained either that morning or the night before, leaving some muddy patches on the course. When I reached the first big downhill section, I went sliding nearly halfway down. I quickly got back up, wiped the mud off on my race bib (one I am proud to keep in my collection), and continued on. Crossing the finish line and finding out that I had qualified alongside my teammate, Ava, was truly magical.

How do you balance schoolwork and training?
I try to keep myself as busy as possible and maintain a structured daily routine. The more free time I have, the easier it is for me to get distracted. For me, the biggest factor is prioritizing quality sleep, as it significantly impacts my performance in both academics and athletics. I often do homework during lunch, utilize any free time wisely, and am fortunate to have a very supportive family and teammates who help me through tough days.

Who is your biggest inspiration in running?
My biggest inspirations in running are tied between my dad and Katelyn Tuohy, although for very different reasons. They both possess grit and determination. I know the fan favorite has shifted in the collegiate world, especially over the past two years, but even when Katelyn wasn’t winning, she inspired me even more. I started following her at the end of 8th grade and spent time watching her old training videos. I admire her humility and perseverance through all her challenges. I have experienced several injuries over my high school career and faced plenty of mental battles, so when training gets tough, I remind myself of some of her mottos from her high school years.
