How do you stay focused and avoid distractions during a race?
To avoid distractions while I run, I always look for opportunities to pass and assess the runners around me. This approach is mainly effective at the beginning of the race. As I near the end, I tend to lean into the distractions and let my mind wander to take my focus off the pain, while still staying alert for any opportunities that might arise.
What is the most challenging course you’ve run, and how did you tackle it?
The most challenging course I’ve run is at Hershey. It used to feel a lot harder, but the more I broke it down, the easier it became. One way I handle tough courses is by breaking them into smaller, more manageable sections. For the Hershey course, the key is to start really fast to secure a good position. Later, you have to take the hills quickly during the 1st and 2nd miles. By the last mile, the field is usually spread out, making it harder to catch up, but since it’s flat, it’s definitely a faster segment. After running this course multiple times, I’ve realized that starting fast truly changes the outcome of the entire race.
What have you learned from competing against tougher opponents?
One thing I’ve learned from competing against stronger opponents is that the mental game changes significantly. You have to prepare yourself to be more aggressive and willing to push when needed. I’d prefer to be a kinder competitor, but now that I’m facing such high-level competition, I have to be more assertive and determined not to let others pass me. The biggest lesson I’ve gained is a deep appreciation for all levels of competition. Reflecting on my progress, I see how much effort it takes at every level. Even if the times may not match mine or others’, everyone is working just as hard, and that effort deserves respect. We all had to start somewhere, and this experience has really reinforced that perspective for me.
