What is your approach to setting goals throughout your season?
To stay motivated through tough training, I remind myself what it means to work hard and how it is a necessary part of accomplishing my goals. I also keep in mind that I’m not only doing this for myself, but for my team as well.
What has been your most memorable race, and why?
My most memorable race was actually a fairly insignificant one, but I believe it was a building block for the runner I am today. I don’t remember the exact year, but it happened when I was around 7 or 8 years old. At the start of the race, when the gun went off, I fell flat on my face and got trampled by everyone. I was so far behind and crying on the ground when I heard my mom scream, “Get up and run!” I pushed myself up and ended up winning that race. Looking back, I always laugh when I remember this race, and I think it has taught me that the race isn’t over until it’s truly over.
What is your favorite motivational quote?
One of my favorite inspirational quotes is by Gandhi: “Strength does not come from winning. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.” This quote means a lot to me because sometimes we lose ourselves to the idea that winning is all that matters, and if we lose, we are somehow worth less. However, it is through losing that we gain the strength and perseverance needed to eventually win. No one starts as a winner; we have to earn it, and I believe this quote illustrates that perfectly.
