Vault Athletics: Dakari Payne NixonTFXC Q&A

Dakari Payne – Seneca Valley

Out of all your jumps, which one stands out as the most memorable and why?
Out of all my jumps, the most memorable one would have to be when I cleared 6’3” last year. Later that day, when I reflected on it, I realized that I could truly excel in this event and might even have the potential to take it to the next level.

What are your biggest goals for the upcoming season?

My goal for my junior outdoor season was to clear 6’5” and qualify for states. Since I have already achieved both, my new goal is to clear 6’7” and possibly place at states.

How do you stay calm and focused while waiting for your event to start?
To be honest, I don’t usually get nervous before my event. The nerves kick in when I’m attempting higher heights alongside competitors. I stay calm in these situations by taking deep breaths before I jump and reminding myself that the height isn’t as intimidating as it seems. I try to trick myself into believing it’s lower than it actually is, which helps me stay confident.
