What first drew you to pole vaulting, and how did you know it was the right event for you?
My dad used to coach pole vault, and he introduced me to the sport. Ever since then, I’ve loved it. My school also hosted a sixth-grade mini track camp, which I participated in—and while I enjoyed all of it, I was especially drawn to pole vaulting. Having my dad as a coach has been a huge advantage. He helps me train and has always been my biggest supporter.
What’s the biggest mental challenge you’ve overcome in pole vaulting?
Like many pole vaulters, I’ve faced my fair share of mental challenges. Last year, my biggest struggle was letting minor soreness or fatigue affect my mindset. If I felt even a little sore or tired, I’d immediately think, Oh, I’m just not going to do well in practice today. This year, shifting to a positive mindset—no matter how I feel—has made a huge difference. My practices have been so much more productive just by changing my outlook.
In meets, I’ve also learned that confidence and focusing on myself are crucial, especially in an individual sport like pole vault. As a freshman, I was too focused on what everyone else was doing instead of concentrating on my own progress. This year, I’ve realized that staying in my own lane, both mentally and physically, is the key to success.
If you had to sum up the thrill of pole vaulting in just one word, what would it be and why?
Crazy. Because pole vault is crazy. You’re literally flinging yourself over a bar 12 feet in the air with a fiberglass pole. I think you have to be at least a little crazy to be a pole vaulter! But it’s also incredibly fun—there’s nothing like the feeling of flying through the air and landing in the pit, especially when you clear a bar. And when that bar happens to be a PR? That’s the best feeling in the world.
