Salt & Pepper Food Truck: Karlee Buterbaugh NixonTFXC Q&A

Karlee Buterbaugh Knoch

Out of shot put, discus, and javelin, which event challenges you the most and why?
Shot put is my biggest challenge personally. I use the glide step rather than the spin, which is less effective for certain shot putters. It’s also difficult for me to set aside time for shot put because my main events, such as javelin and the 4×100 relay, take up a lot of practice time.

Looking back on your journey, what has been the most rewarding improvement in your technique or strength?
After a very strong start to my freshman year, I tore my ACL, which had a major impact on my strength and performance in my events. When I returned my sophomore year, I was throwing 50 feet less than I had as a freshman. It was both mentally and physically challenging, which pushed me to work even harder to regain everything I had lost—and more—to reach my goals. By the end of the season, I was throwing back in the 120s and felt stronger than ever. I ended up placing 6th at states!

Can you describe the exact moment when you knew you had thrown your best-ever mark?
I went into the WPIAL team finals more excited than ever on a beautiful, sunny day. I stepped onto the runway and knew at that moment that my javelin was about to fly. After the final steps and the toss to finish, I had that feeling every thrower gets on a great throw. When I heard the mark, I couldn’t have been happier, knowing that I had PR’d and broken the school record—again!
