Garrett Myers Springdale

What initially drew you to shot put/discus, and how did you get started in the sport?
Honestly, I first tried out for track in middle school just to lose weight, and that’s when I learned about throwing. I got started through the Penn Hills Eagle Club Team in the summer before 9th grade, but I truly believe I got serious about the sport during my first year of high school track in 10th grade (since I didn’t compete freshman year). That’s when I met my external coach, Coach Jayne Beatty, who I give all the credit to for enhancing my skills and pushing me to be the best version of myself. I truly wouldn’t be doing what I am without her.

How do you mentally prepare before stepping into the ring for a big throw?
I always remind myself that just trying to throw far won’t actually make me throw far. It’s all about focusing on the basics—good form, staying relaxed, and executing the technique properly. Trusting that process is what sets me up for success in a throw.

What’s been your proudest moment in your throwing career so far, and why?
My proudest moment has been being the best version of myself when it matters most. At WPIALs, I PR’d by about 6 feet, then at states, I added another 5 feet to my PR. Even starting this season, I hit another PR by 5 feet. I’ve been able to elevate myself in big moments and not let great competition affect me. Instead, I rise to the occasion when it’s needed.
