Whiskey Rebellion 5K Run and Walk: Kwilai Karto NixonTFXC Q&A

Kwilai Karto Quaker Valley

What’s been the most unforgettable moment of your track and field career so far, and what made it so special?
The most unforgettable moment of my track and field career so far was when both the boys’ and girls’ QV track teams won WPIAL titles last spring. I’ve been a part of multiple varsity sports throughout my high school career, and I was blown away by the support across events for every teammate competing that day as we eagerly worked toward a shared goal.

What do you love most about being a track and field athlete, and how has the sport shaped you as a person?
I love being part of a sport where there is something for everyone. One way that track has shaped me as a person is by giving me a deep appreciation for all different types of athletes. Some of my closest friends on the team have very different training schedules, yet we all come together to cheer one another on with such an incredible level of enthusiasm and excitement. I’ve carried lessons from track into other areas of my life—particularly those involving collaboration, discipline, and accountability.

Who has been the biggest influence on your track and field journey?
Coach Jones (head coach for QVHS track and field) has been the biggest influence on my track and field journey. He has challenged me as both an athlete and a person by encouraging me not to underestimate my capabilities. At the same time, he’s given me the space to make my own decisions and has always respected my academic commitments. Coach Jones was the first person to prompt me to consider running track at the collegiate level. Although I doubted myself at first, he consistently showed his support and encouraged me to advocate for myself. I am incredibly appreciative of his work as a coach—especially his attention to detail, reassurance, and overall support of athletes as people, not just competitors.
