From Two Laps to 5K: How Cross Country Is Building Indiana’s 800-Meter Duo

Liam Templeton and Kaiden Branan

As training continues to evolve and high school athletes keep getting faster, the 800 meters continues to reach another level. The event requires a unique combination of speed and endurance. You have to be fast enough to race two laps at a high level, but strong enough to have something left when the real racing begins over the final 200 meters.

Indiana Area’s Liam Templeton and Kaiden Branan understand that combination well. Two of the WPIAL’s best in the 800 meters are trading the track for 5,000 meters on the cross-country course this fall.

At the 2026 WPIAL Track & Field Championships, Templeton captured the WPIAL 800-meter championship, while Branan finished fifth. Their personal bests show just how close the two Indiana runners are. Templeton has run 1:53.79, while Branan is just 0.22 seconds behind at 1:54.01.

Two teammates separated by less than a quarter of a second.

For Branan, running cross country provides an opportunity to develop the aerobic strength needed when an 800-meter race starts to hurt.

“It gives you that aerobic base for that second lap, so you can really pick it up on the second lap,” Branan said.

Templeton sees a similar benefit.

“I think it helps most for that distance part of the 800, so you can get a kick and not die out for that second lap,” Templeton said.

Their answers point to one of the biggest challenges of the event. It’s not just about how fast you can run, but how well you can maintain that pace after 400, 500 and 600 meters while still having something left for the finish. The cross-country season gives Templeton and Branan months to develop that endurance.

They also have something that can be difficult to find: a teammate capable of matching them stride for stride.

“It just creates a competitive environment where every day, you’re working hard and trying to get better,” Branan said.

For Templeton, having someone at a similar level also helps him judge where he is during workouts.

“It helps you with pacing, so you kind of get a good feel for where you’re at because we’re normally around the same time,” Templeton said. “It’s nice to have someone to run with at all your practices.”

Whether it’s an 800 on the track, a 5K on the trails or another day of practice, Templeton and Branan have each other to push the competition and training to another level.

Still, some middle-distance runners may wonder whether the extra mileage that comes with cross country could take away from what they need on the track.

Branan doesn’t believe it does.

“I don’t think it does,” Branan said. “I think it just gives you an opportunity to compete over the fall and just get better.”

Templeton understands the concern but believes the additional work can pay off when track season starts.

“I can see why they say that, but you get that extra aerobic and just that extra training throughout the cross-country season, and it helps out,” Templeton said.

For Templeton and Branan, the fall isn’t about becoming pure distance runners. It’s another piece of their development as athletes a chance to compete, build endurance and push each other before returning to their best event.

When spring arrives, the trails will disappear and 5,000 meters will become 800 meters again. Templeton will return as the defending WPIAL champion, while Branan will return as one of the WPIAL’s fastest.

And when the bell rings with 400 meters to go, all those miles from the fall could start paying off.
